This week’s spotlight

The European Commission Staff Regulations provide unemployment benefits for former staff members meeting specific criteria: a minimum of six months' service, termination without retirement or invalidity pension from the EU, residing in an EU Member State, and not leaving due to resignation or disciplinary reasons. The allowance, based on previous salary, offers 60% for the first 12 months, decreasing to 30% for months 25 to 36, with a maximum benefit duration capped at three years. Accepting an indefinite contract with the EU might prevent eligibility for these benefits, but it also secures a stable position despite this limitation, highlighting the unique aspect of receiving substantial unemployment compensation for three years after job termination.
