This week’s spotlight

Europol’s has been rocked by a recent scandal. Apparently the personnel files of several highly appointed staff members (Executive Director and similar) have been lost. The Head of HR, “Massimiliano Bettin, was placed on administrative leave”. You can read the full first article on the topic from Politico. 

In case you are wondering, the personnel files are paper (and digital) documents that hold not only all the information that the EU staff member had to submit when applying for the job, but also all medical records, trainings, various certificates and appraisals. In EU agencies, these files are typically managed by a dedicated staff member(s).

The fact that Massimiliano Bettin was not able to pin this issue on a low-level Contract Agent suggests systematic failures. Certainly, this is a huge scandal for Europol.
