This week’s spotlight

If you joined the EU institutions after 2014, the rules governing your career are meaningfully different from those of longer-serving colleagues — and the differences are not in your favour. This week's article breaks down exactly what the 2014 Staff Regulations changed: from longer working hours and a new solidarity levy eating into your take-home pay, to a higher retirement age and a reduced pension accrual rate that will quietly cost you over a full career. The piece also explains the political backdrop that drove these changes — with the Commission under pressure to align with the austerity gripping national governments across Europe at the time. If you want to understand the rules that will shape your salary, your workload, and your retirement, this is the article to read.

The European Banking Authority (EBA) is looking for a Senior Expert in Depositor Protection to join its Innovation, Conduct and Consumers department in Paris, where you would lead a taskforce of national deposit guarantee scheme authorities from all 27 EU member states and coordinate the delivery of the EBA's mandates under the revised Deposit Guarantee Schemes Directive. While the essential requirements focus on proven knowledge of EU banking regulation and depositor protection, candidates who can also demonstrate broader stakeholder management experience, a background in consumer protection or payments, and the ability to work across multiple policy areas will have a competitive edge in the selection process. The position is offered as a three-year temporary agent contract at grade AD7, based in La Défense, Paris, with an estimated start date of 1 July 2026. The deadline to apply is 12 March 2026 at 23:59 CET.

A word from our team

If you are considering a move to Brussels for an EU career, you may have come across alarming YouTube videos painting the city as unsafe or unwelcoming, but a new article in The Brussels Times explains why you should take them with a large pinch of salt. These videos are part of a deliberate "rage-bait" trend, where content creators — often with far-right agendas — deliberately seek out confrontations and present a distorted picture of the city purely to drive views and advertising revenue, with no obligation to report the truth. Reassuringly, a communications researcher at VUB notes that Brussels itself has almost no far-right presence, and the city's diversity is largely a strength rather than a weakness, so do not let algorithmic outrage put you off what could be the first step of your EU career.
