The European Data Protection Supervisor is currently recruiting an IT Application Support and Project Assistant (FGIII) within its Technology and Privacy Unit in Brussels. This role focuses on supporting IT applications and contributing to project management activities, including coordinating tasks, assisting with system implementation, and ensuring smooth communication between technical teams and users. Candidates with experience or knowledge in IT support, project coordination, or business analysis will be particularly well suited. Advantageous requirements for this position include familiarity with IT service management or project management methodologies, experience working with collaborative tools or enterprise applications, and knowledge of EU institutions or data protection frameworks. The deadline for submitting applications is 14 April 2026 at 12:00 (Brussels time).

A word from our team

The EU is grappling with a series of cyberattacks targeting its institutions, with at least two confirmed breaches in 2025. First, the Commission's cloud services (running europa.eu) were compromised in late March, with attackers stealing personal data including names, email addresses, and email content. Second, in January, attackers breached the system managing staff mobile devices, potentially accessing staff names and phone numbers.

On top of the infrastructure hacks, officials were also targeted on Signal. Russian-linked hackers posed as fake Signal support chatbots to trick officials into revealing their PIN codes, prompting the Commission to shut down a senior officials' Signal group. This mirrors a broader trend of European governments moving away from consumer apps like Signal and WhatsApp toward in-house secure communication tools.

As for who's responsible, the picture is split: national security services blame the Kremlin for the Signal campaign, while the cloud breach has been attributed to ShinyHunters, an English-speaking cybercriminal group that previously hit a Dutch telecom, Jaguar Land Rover, and Google. It's not yet clear whether all the incidents are connected.

A Western intelligence official quoted in the article put it bluntly — the EU has long under-invested in cybersecurity while spending heavily elsewhere, and is now paying the price.
